MTV Stuttgart: Das Spätsommer-Interview

The goal is to continue building our young players, giving them more responsability and in same time, staying in the league.

Wie hast du dein Team zusammengestellt?

The team is in many aspects different compared to team of the last season. With nine  U20 players we are now a young team that will be led by a few experienced players.

Was sind genau die Unterschiede?

Young and commited players . Our DNA is that we train hard, we train smart and we all want to achieve something as a team. As a talented team we do not rely on experience but we will fight with great energy and determination. We want to build basketball characters and a culture for our young players .

DBBL?

The club wants to see young german players improving and growing. 2. DBBL is a logical step for our MTV Stuttgart Basketball Academy. That’s why we put the Academy on our Jerseys.

We are really proud that our young player Anastasia Schlipf was part of the U19 national team this summer and played at the world cup. We want to create more Anastasia stories for young german players. Anastasia would not have become a national player if she would have played only in Regionalliga.

Wie seid Ihr bei MTV Stuttgart aufgestellt?

With the club structure in the background and a full time coach, our club is greatly positioned as program for young ambitious players:

We practise every day.

We offer professional athletic training support with Individual athletic programs with our athletics and performance Coach Desmond Thompson

We have between 3 – 4 individual practice sessions per week.

I am doubting that many clubs in 2. DBBL offer breakfast club individual practice twice a week at 6 o’clock in the morning.

It is a really good league with great players and talented coaches. Our first season was a real challenge with an unbalanced mix of WNBL and seasoned Regionaliga Players. This season was important because of many learnings what we need on and off the court at this level .

Last season was great with eight straight wins, a succesfull young player story, 6th rank and first time playoff.

2. Toyota DBBL is a perfect league for developing young players. I would say that in order to be successfull in 2.DBBL you need a young talented and commited team with 2 or 3 experience players to guide the team .

Germany does need to do lot for girls basketball the next 3 years in order to create a great atmosphere before the world cup in Berlin.

In 2010 with my back then Club Rodez we hosted the u17 women’s basketball world cup and this experience was amazing and a real success. I would like to promote women’s basketball in Germany a lot more!!! Because honestly, it is not enough, but we need to be creative and smart.

I think that it is still to „net“ and not enough competitive but it is a much better. With my camps program, I had the opportunity to see female basketball in different countries. Germany has a lot of potential but needs to have an more agressive mentality when it comes to „Leistungsbasketball“. As a start, keep the gyms open during holidays and make the kids compete in ball sports from an younger age, e.g. 4. We need to develop an hungry and competitve mindset in addition to some fun training in the younger age groups.

Was kann der deutsche Basketball insbesondere on Frankreich lernen?

I think France is more competetive in many aspects of the game. The „INSEP“ concept is something that Germany need. Having all the national players in the same place, going to school together, having a school schedule in order to train more. Imagine the u16 or U17 national team playing as a team in 2. DBBL with the garanty to stay in the league no matter of the season results. This could be a game changer in German in player development.

Was sollte die 2. DBBL als Liga verbessern?

This league is a really good Basketball quality league but nobody is aware of this. Basketball should be a show: imagine what will happen if in December break

  1. an All Star Game in 1. DBBL:  the 12 best import players coached by the best import coach vs the 12 best german players.
  2. a 2. DBBL All Star Game: the 12 best Nord vs 12 best Süd players (e.g wach 6 import and 6 german players) coached each by a german and an Import coach.
  3. having Awards like MVP of the league , best German player, best Import, best young player, best coach, first starting 5 of the league … this will make the league much more visible
  4. more social media content with players interview and coaches interview .

I think this will promote girls basketball a give the league a profile. MTV Stuttgart 1843 would be ready to support that approach.
